The Papplewick Earthquakes

On 24th December 1999 there was a small earthquake near Papplewick.  The ‘quake measured 1.3 on the Richter scale, which is considered very small.  It occurred at 17:17 GMT and was felt by local people because it was only at shallow depth.  It is likely that the earthquake occurred as a result of disturbance by coal mining.

On 28th October 2001, the parish was shaken by another earthquake.  This ‘quake measured 4.1 on the Richter scale, and is thought to have been the largest to have occurred in the area since 1750.  The epicentre of the earthquake was 7km north of Melton Mowbray, and the focus was 14.6km below the surface. It occurred at 16:25 GMT.
