'City 2000' is a plan to regenerate Nottingham city centre. It began in the late 1990s and is still continuing. The aim of the project is to promote Nottingham as the regional capital, and there are several subsidiary aims to the project

1. The old market square is the traditional heart of the city. Environmental improvements have been carried out here. It is increasingly used for attractions like fairs and exhibitions which draw people into the city. The NET Line One links the traditional centre of the city to other attractions. |

The environment around the Market Square has been improved with seating, and litter bins, in a repaved pedestrian area. |

Listed buildings have been sympathetically rebuilt, to retain their character. Vehicles are discouraged by pedestrianised areas and one-way streets. Bus stops have been improved to make public transport more attractive. The NET line one links the city centre to centres of population and park and ride sites. Cycle racks, bollards, and lamp posts improve the 'street scene' |

Development on Low Pavement which reinforces the north-south axis of the city. Street cafes and bistros attract people in the evenings. |

Tourism and regional identity are improved by shops like this - selling lace and the Robin Hood image. |

To improve the regional shopping status, the Victoria centre has been refurbished and extended. This is a gateway project, improving the image of the city by building high-status buildings on the approaches to the city. The flagship attraction at the north of the centre is the 'House of Frazer' store, and it is hoped that this will attract smaller businesses. |

7. The 'Lace market'
district has been redeveloped. Here, the 'Adams building'
has been developed as a part of the college - a new use
for an old building and an improvement to the high
technology of the area. |

Along the southern edge of the Lace Market area is High Pavement. Examples of improvements include - the redundant Courts building which has been redeveloped as the 'Galleries of Justice' exhibition centre and the redevelopment of the church as a pub/nightclub. The NET line one passes through this area, assisting its regeneration. |

The London Road site, formerly a Boots factory' has been redeveloped. This building is the new headquaters of BBC East Midlands - reinforcing the regional status of the city. This is another 'gateway' project - improving the image of buildings which are located at the entrances to the city. The new ice stadium is also found in this area. |

10. In the 1960's the city was replanned to improve roads - often at the expense of pedestrians. 'Maid Marion Way' was driven through the heart of the historic city centre, dividing the city for pedestrians. Underpasses like this are being removed because they are now seen as being unsafe. |

Soon it will be the Broadmarsh centre which is refurbished and extended. If the work is carried out as planned this road - Collin Street - will disappear under the extended centre. |
|||||||||||||
The Nurses hostel of the old General Hospital, and some of the hospital buildings near the castle have been rebuilt as residential district, attracting 'exclusive' residents to a high priced district. This encourages people to live nearer the city centre and encourages the development of a '24 hour city', rather than 'an office hours city'. |
|||||||||||||
13. In March 2004 the NET Line One opened, providing a transport route from Hucknall and Phoenix Park to the Midland Railway Station. This links the CBD with park and ride sites. The trams can be used by shoppers, commuters or visitors. Traffic will be reduced in the city centre and on roads leading to the centre. |
