| NEW HOUSING FOR HUCKNALL |
|
Under Government plans, Ashfield District and Gedling Borough Councils were expected to find space for around 8000 new homes in the next 20 years. These need to be close to the City of Nottingham, which is the biggest source of employment. Both councils agree that one way of doing that would be to extend the size of Hucknall.
What is a suitable site ?
The councils have divided possible sites into greenfield sites (built on farmland) and brownfield sites (built as part of redevelopment of derelict land).
Brownfield sites are more acceptable because they make the best use of land, and do not damage the environment. Developing greenfield sites will encourage towns to merge with surrounding settlements - leading to conurbations or urban sprawl.
For long term planning, brownfield sites are difficult to plan, because they become available at short notice - for example when a factory closes.
New housing should be close to public transport, to try to encourage people to cut down on using their car - better for the environment.
New sites should contain or be close to open space, for leisure and recreation.
They should also be close to shops and services, so that people are not forced to use their car.
If greenfield sites have to be used, then low-grade agricultural land should be the preference. Land with mature hedgerows should be avoided if possible.
Where are the proposed sites ?
The map below shows sites of proposed greenfield development around Hucknall.
