The beaches of Flamborough
An introduction to beaches.

Beaches are accumulations of sand and shingle along the coastline.  They are complex.  The loose sediment absorbs the energy of breaking waves.  In doing so, the sand is transported up and down and along the beach, by the movement of the water, and the beach is shaped.  The diagram below shows the forms found on a typical beach.  You may click on parts of the diagram to see pictures of examples from the Flamborough coastline.
