On 24th December 1999 there was a small earthquake near Papplewick. The 'quake measured 1.3 on the Richter scale, which is considered very small. It occurred at 17:17 GMT and was felt by local people because it was only at shallow depth. It is likely that the earthquake occurred as a result of disturbance of the near-surface rock strata by coal mining. |
