The  Papplewick Earthquake (Dec 1999)


On 24th December 1999 there was a small earthquake near Papplewick.  The 'quake measured 1.3 on the Richter scale, which is considered very small.  It occurred at 17:17 GMT and was felt by local people because it was only at shallow depth.  It is likely that the earthquake occurred as a result of disturbance of the near-surface rock strata by coal mining.
